A Week of Wonder at Wenlock

Our weekly glimpse into life at Much Wenlock Primary School.

This week has been full of exciting opportunities for our children to learn, create and be inspired.

We enjoyed a whole-school music assembly from Shropshire Music Service, where children experienced the joy of a live acoustic performance, with some pupils enjoying live music for the very first time.

Tilia Class impressed Mrs Wells with their fantastic balance, coordination and listening skills during PE, showing great focus and following instructions brilliantly.

Abbey Class embraced scientific discovery, using magnets to separate mixtures of sand, rocks and metal while developing their enquiry skills.

Across the school, children marked Black History Week by learning about inspirational Black figures from history, music, sport and politics. These important discussions encouraged reflection on the contributions they have made to society and celebrated the value of equity and inclusion.

Edge Class had a wonderfully creative week, exploring artistic techniques including impasto, using paint mixed with flour to create texture, and sgraffito, scratching through paint to reveal the surface beneath. The results showcased fantastic creativity and skill.

A Fantastic Afternoon of New Challenges

On Wednesday afternoon, Edge and Windmill Classes enjoyed a fun‑filled orienteering and Tri‑Golf event at William Brookes School. For some pupils it was their first time trying a new sport, and everyone embraced the experience. There was lots of teamwork, healthy competition, and enjoyment throughout the afternoon.

Windmill Class Rise to the Challenge at Pioneer

Windmill Class enjoyed a highly successful residential at Pioneer, where pupils demonstrated excellent teamwork, resilience and bravery. Children supported one another, embraced new challenges and showed growing confidence and independence throughout the experience. The residential made a valuable contribution to pupils’ personal development and strengthened positive relationships within the class.

Cricket Fever Hits Our School!

We were delighted to welcome Willey Cricket Club into school on Wednesday, who delivered high‑quality coaching sessions for every class. The children had a fantastic time developing new skills, confidence and teamwork through fun, engaging games alongside expert coaching techniques. For many, this was their first experience of cricket, opening up new opportunities and helping to unlock hidden talents through inclusive and enriching sport.

We are always proud of our wonderful children, but it means so much to hear others recognise this too. Here are just some of the lovely things the coaches said about our school:

“This is such a lovely school.”
“One of the best schools I’ve been to.”
“The children have been so nice.”
“The best behaviour I’ve seen!”

A huge thank you to Willey Cricket Club for supporting our commitment to enrichment, community partnerships and positive experiences for all our children 🏏✨

Inspiring Assembly with Author Catherine Barr

We were delighted to welcome children’s author Catherine Barr into school this morning, where she led a fantastic whole‑school assembly. Catherine shared how her love of nature, the planet and real‑life issues inspires her books, which aim to empower young people to care about the world around them and believe they can make a difference 🌍💚

The children were completely engaged, showing great enthusiasm for her stories and asking thoughtful, insightful questions that sparked real discussion. It was wonderful to see such curiosity and confidence from our pupils.

Thank you, Catherine, for such an inspiring morning and for encouraging the next generation of readers, thinkers and changemakers!

A Wonderful Day of Discovery for Windmill Class

Windmill Class enjoyed a truly wonderful day of immersive outdoor learning at Bishops Wood, set within beautiful ancient woodland.

They took part in hands‑on environmental studies and stepped into the past with engaging living‑history activities, including learning Saxon and Viking skills that brought history to life in the most memorable way.

A fantastic day of curiosity, nature, and adventure!

⚽🌟 Year 3 & 4 Girls Shine on the Pitch! 🌟⚽

A huge well done to our Year 3 and 4 girls’ football team, who played brilliantly in their competition at William Brookes School! The team showed fantastic teamwork, determination and sportsmanship throughout every match  and we’re thrilled to share that they’ve made it through to the next round!
A special shout‑out to Mr Oldershaw, the girls’ unofficial coach, for his enthusiasm, encouragement and brilliant support on the sidelines.
We’re so proud of this amazing team. Keep kicking on, girls! 💪✨

The wondrous River Severn

Edge and Windmill classes had a fantastic day at Severn Valley Country Park last week. The river work gave the Year 3 children a brilliant insight into the Year 4 curriculum, as they followed the tributary, explored features of the river, and watched how the water moved. A big highlight was playing Pooh Sticks on the bridge! The orienteering challenge was exciting too, with groups working confidently to find each checkpoint using their maps and more importantly, the visitors centre for lunch!

The children showed excellent teamwork, enthusiasm, and curiosity throughout a wonderful day of outdoor learning.

🌿 Windmill at the Windmill! 🌿

Last week, Windmill Class enjoyed a wonderful morning exploring our local area. We walked up to the old Windmill, where we carried out environmental surveys and created some scientific drawings of the landscape — linking perfectly with our Science, Geography, and Art learning.

Afterwards, we stopped by Barrow Street Café, inspired by our recent English work on Gorilla, where the characters share a special moment in a café. The children were delighted to collect some cake to take back to school and enjoy together! 🍰

A big well done to all of Windmill Class for their enthusiasm, curiosity, and excellent behaviour throughout the morning! 👏

KS2 Cross-Country success

We are incredibly proud of all the children who took part in the KS2 Cross-Country event, held at William Brooke’s School yesterday.

Representing our school with enthusiasm and determination, each runner gave their absolute best — and did so with smiles on their faces!

It was wonderful to see such team spirit, resilience, and joy throughout the event. Whether they were seasoned runners or trying cross country for the first time, every child showed great character and commitment.

The event was a huge success and everyone who took part did themselves proud.

Online author experience

Windmill, Abbey and Linden classes were buzzing with excitement during the recent online author visit from Mickey Please.

Mickey captivated pupils with tales from his books, shared insights into the writing process, and answered questions with humour and heart. Children were inspired not only by his creativity, including attempting his illustrations of the ogre, but by his encouragement to find their own voices and stories.

The session sparked imaginations across the classes, as children joined in with a live draw-a-long activity, leaving pupils eager to write, draw, and dream big.

Unlocking Potential – Empowering Every Child to Thrive

Our Year 4 Pioneers – loving life!

What a fantastic few days our Year 4 children had at Pioneer. Our key values of wonder and resilience being shown here.

This is the Wenlock Way – feeling the fear and doing it anyway.

Belonging is supporting others to be brave, encouraging our peers to try new things and celebrating their successes.

Stepping back in time, to Roman Britain

Today marked the final city trip of our spring term for Year 3 and 4 – a fantastic visit to Chester!

As part of our history in action and cultural capital focus, the children stepped back in time to experience Roman Deva. From exploring ancient artefacts to marching through the city streets like true Roman soldiers, they deepened their understanding of Roman Britain and brought their classroom learning to life.

A brilliant end to our spring adventures – well done, everyone!

STEM Wonder Curiosity

Our Year 3 and 4 students had an exciting trip to the Think Tank in Birmingham!

The children explored science and technology exhibits, sparking their curiosity and linking perfectly with our STEM focus this term. It was a day filled with wonder, hands-on learning, and inspiring moments as our students discovered more about the world around them.

Multi-Faith Week Continued

As Multi-Faith Week continues, Year 4 enjoyed learning about the Sikh tradition of Langar, a powerful symbol of equality and community. They explored how Sikhs serve free meals to people of all backgrounds in an act of kindness and humility.

The children even got to try dal, a staple dish often served in the Langar kitchens, and it was met with enthusiastic thumbs-up all around!

The whole school also had the pleasure of hearing from Cathy Landau, who gave a fascinating talk about Judaism. She shared insights about the Sabbath, Jewish festivals throughout the year, key milestones in a Jewish child’s life, and the rules surrounding food preparation. Cathy also explained the purpose of a synagogue, the importance of daily prayers, and the 613 rules that guide Jewish living.

It’s been a wonderful week of discovery, celebrating the diversity of beliefs and traditions within our global community!

Key Stage 2 Author Visit

Key Stage 2 students had an exciting opportunity to participate in a live virtual workshop with acclaimed author Katherine Rundell, one of the key authors featured in our reciprocal reading sessions. The workshop filled our students with a sense of wonder, inspiring a deep love for reading. Katherine Rundell’s captivating stories and insights into the writing process left a lasting impact, sparking enthusiasm and creativity among our young readers. This event was a fantastic way to nurture their imaginations and passion for literature.
