Vision, Ethos and Values

Our Vision

Our vision is simple but powerful – Unlocking Potential: Empowering Every Child to Thrive.

At our school, we are dedicated to fostering happiness, resilience and a love for learning in every child. By working hand in hand with our community, we set high expectations and strive for academic excellence, unlocking each child’s unique potential and creating a nurturing, equitable environment where all students can flourish.

Ethos and Values

At the heart of our school are the values that guide everything we do: Wonder, Resilience, Equity, Nurture, and Sustainability – WRENS.

Wonder: We cultivate a sense of curiosity and awe, encouraging students to explore the world around them with open minds and a thirst for knowledge.

Resilience: We build strength and perseverance, helping students to overcome challenges and learn from setbacks, fostering a mindset of growth and determination.

Equity: We are committed to fairness and inclusivity, ensuring that every child has access to the opportunities and support they need to succeed, regardless of their background.

Nurture: We create a supportive and caring environment, where every child feels valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential.

Sustainability: We instill a sense of responsibility for the world we live in, teaching our students to act with care and consideration for the environment, and to make choices that contribute to a sustainable future.

Together, these values shape our vision and ethos, guiding us in unlocking potential and empowering every child to thrive in a complex and ever-changing global community.

The Wenlock Way – Our Behaviour Curriculum

At Much Wenlock Primary School and Nursery, we are proud of The Wenlock Way – our bespoke, whole-school behaviour curriculum that sets out clear expectations and consistent routines to help every child thrive.

Rooted in our belief that behaviour is taught, not assumed, The Wenlock Way is designed to promote a calm, respectful and inclusive learning environment. Through explicit teaching, modelling, and reinforcement of positive behaviours, we support our children to develop self-regulation, empathy, and a strong sense of community.

Our approach ensures that all staff use consistent language and shared routines, creating a safe and predictable school environment where children feel valued and understood. When behaviour does not meet expectations, we respond with clarity, care and a focus on restoration – helping children to reflect, take responsibility, and make positive choices.

The Wenlock Way is more than just a set of rules; it’s a culture. It underpins everything we do and reflects our commitment to nurturing respectful, resilient and responsible learners who are ready for the wider world.

British Values at Much Wenlock Primary School

British values are the foundation of our society, community, and school. At Much Wenlock Primary, we don’t just teach these values – we live them. Each term, we explicitly focus on one of these values through our Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education sessions. Additionally, we embed them weekly through initiatives such as Picture News and 1Decision, our PSHE program. These values shape our policies, lessons, and daily interactions, serving as the cornerstones of The Wenlock Way. This commitment creates an inclusive and welcoming environment, fostering resilience, empowerment, and respect in all who walk through our doors. By instilling these ideals from an early age, we ensure that our children grow into thoughtful, respectful, and tolerant individuals.

Our curriculum naturally integrates British values across subjects. For example, a history wonderous lesson on the Suffragette movement explores democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law, and mutual respect and tolerance by examining the fight for women’s right to vote. More than just learning about these values, our students practice them—whether through self-expression in reading prosody or by taking part in democratic processes such as class votes for the School Council and Ambassador Programmes.

The Ambassador Programme – Agents of Positive Change

At Much Wenlock, our School Council lies at the heart of our student community. These representatives amplify student voices, engage in democratic decision-making, refine their communication skills, and help shape the future of our school.

Beyond the School Council, our ambassadors lead in key areas:

  •  Reading Ambassadors foster a love for reading, serving as performance ambassadors, reading buddies, and librarians who make our school a hub of reading excellence.
  •  Sustainability Ambassadors champion eco-friendly initiatives, ensuring our school makes a positive impact on the environment both locally and globally.
  •  Behaviour Ambassadors model the high standards of behaviour expected within our thriving community, upholding The Wenlock Way in all they do.
  •  IT Ambassadors work alongside our Trust IT team to maintain school technology, ensuring devices are functional and charged for learning. They are also developing action plans to enhance computing education and build intergenerational connections by teaching older members of our wider community essential digital skills—demonstrating our value of nurture.

Picture News – Encouraging Open Dialogue

Our Picture News programme introduces a weekly news article with a thought-provoking question, providing children with a safe space to discuss complex topics. Each session highlights a specific British value and incorporates discussions on protected characteristics, such as race, religion, and disability. This encourages pupils to engage with important issues, fostering inclusivity and confidence in their identities.

At Much Wenlock, we champion equity – recognising that different students have different needs and ensuring they feel valued as individuals. Through Picture News, children not only learn about inclusion but also develop an understanding of why discrimination is against the law, reinforcing their role as responsible and compassionate citizens.

PSHE and The Wenlock Way

Our PSHE curriculum is an integral part of our whole-school approach to behaviour, safeguarding, and mental wellness. It plays a vital role in helping children understand themselves, build healthy relationships, and make safe, informed choices.

Our PSHE curriculum aligns seamlessly with The Wenlock Way, ensuring children develop age-appropriate knowledge and understanding throughout their education. The 1Decision programme further strengthens this approach by embedding British values into every lesson. For example, interactive sessions allow children to vote on different outcomes for characters, helping them develop an early appreciation of democracy and the impact of personal choices.

By reinforcing these principles, we contribute to a positive, inclusive, and empowering school culture where every child is prepared to navigate the world with confidence, respect, and resilience—through following The Wenlock Way.
