Welcome to Priory – Year 2

Welcome to Priory Class! This is an exciting time where children will grow and develop their confidence, independence, and creativity. Together, we work hard to support one another as we unlock our potential and feel empowered to thrive.

In Priory Class, learning is purposeful, positive, and full of curiosity. We believe every child can succeed and flourish when they feel safe, supported, and encouraged. In our class we have myself (Mr Oldershaw) as your class teacher, Miss Rush and Mrs Hart who helps support all of our lovely learning.

🌿 A Bit About Me – Mr Oldershaw

Hello, I am Mr Oldershaw, and I absolutely love being part of Priory Class!

Outside of school, I am a big sports enthusiast, particularly football! I also enjoy spending time visiting the beautiful Shropshire Hills.

I believe that children should feel inspired, have a sense of wonder, and develop resilience in their learning. By allowing children to express themselves, we help them grow both academically and emotionally.

Any amazing adventures or experiences you have, please share them with the rest of the class!

🌟 Our Vision for Priory Class

In Priory Class, our vision is centred around nurturing the whole child:

🔑 Build Independence

Children take responsibility for their learning  and behaviour.

🌟 Develop Confidence

Children build academic skills  and strong communication, preparing them for Key Stage 2.

👣 Focus on the Small Steps

Every achievement matters, and progress is celebrated.

We celebrate kindness, respect, and resilience every day in Priory Class.

We think Priory class is the best place to be because:

🏡 How Parents Can Help at Home

You play a vital role in supporting your child’s learning.

You can help by:

  • Reading with your child at least three times a week
  • Going through the 2, 5 and 10 times tables regularly to build confidence and fluency
  • Practising spellings
  • Talking with your child about what they have learned at school
  • Encouraging creativity, curiosity, and understanding the importance of learning from mistakes.

Most importantly, celebrate effort and a positive attitude to learning.

🎤 Show and Tell of the Week

Each week, children are invited to take part in Show and Tell.

This could be:

  • An object, photo or project
  • Something linked to learning
  • Something they’re proud of or interested in

Show and Tell helps build confidence, communication skills and listening.

Children are encouraged to give it a go and aim to be 1% better than last week.

Phonics

At Much Wenlock we use Monster Phonics to support our decoding and blending skills. Children enjoy learning the different monsters associated with the different sounds and love how interactive and engaging our phonics lessons are.

In Year 2, phonics continues to play an important role in supporting children’s reading and spelling. Children build on the phonics knowledge they developed in Year 1 by revisiting familiar sounds and learning alternative spellings, including different ways to spell the same sound. There is a strong focus on applying phonics confidently when reading real words, developing fluency, and spelling more complex words independently. Phonics lessons also support children to become more accurate writers, as they learn to choose the correct spelling for words within their written work.
