At Much Wenlock Primary School and Nursery, we are proud to be a welcoming, inclusive school where every child is seen, heard, and valued. While we do not currently have a rich diversity of language within our school community, we are fully prepared to support any child who joins us with English as an Additional Language (EAL).
Our Vision
We believe that all children should feel a strong sense of belonging and have access to high-quality learning opportunities—regardless of their first language. Should a child with EAL join our school, we are committed to ensuring they:
- Receive tailored support to develop English language skills in a nurturing environment
- Are fully included in classroom life and the wider curriculum
- Build confidence in speaking, understanding, reading, and writing in English
- Make strong progress socially, emotionally, and academically
- Have their identity and experiences celebrated as part of our school community
Our Approach
We are ready to provide a carefully structured and inclusive approach to supporting EAL learners. This includes:
- Immersing children in spoken and written English through high-quality classroom interactions
- Using visual prompts, modelling, scaffolding, and peer support to aid understanding
- Integrating speaking and listening opportunities to support language development
- Providing access to bilingual resources, dual-language books, and translated materials where helpful
- Ensuring that all learning remains inclusive, with no separate or reduced curriculum
Our staff understand that a child’s ability to access the curriculum may be more advanced than their ability to communicate in English, and we adapt support accordingly.
Promoting Inclusion and Belonging
At Much Wenlock, we actively promote equity, respect, and empathy through our curriculum and wider school culture. We:
- Teach children to understand and appreciate different backgrounds, experiences, and beliefs
- Use PSHE, assemblies, and classroom discussions to explore identity, inclusion, and fairness
- Celebrate the uniqueness of every child and create a safe space for all voices to be heard
Working with Families
We know that strong home-school partnerships are vital. If a family with English as an Additional Language joins us, we will:
- Communicate clearly and sensitively
- Use translation and interpretation services when needed
- Help parents and carers understand our routines, systems, and expectations
- Work closely with families to support their child’s wellbeing and learning journey
