Welcome to Abbey Class!
This is an exciting and important year where children grow in confidence, independence and curiosity as learners. In Abbey Class, we work hard, support one another and celebrate small improvements every day.
A Bit About Me – Mrs Steventon
Hello! I’m Mrs Steventon, and I love being part of Abbey Class.
Outside of school, I enjoy running and try to get out most mornings before school. Running helps me feel positive, focused and ready for the day ahead. It reminds me that progress comes from perseverance and small steps, which is something I encourage children to remember in their learning too.
I believe that strong relationships are at the heart of successful learning and that every child should experience the joy of creating something they are proud of. In Abbey Class, I encourage children to be inquisitive, reflective and proud of the progress they make every day.
Our Vision for Abbey Class
In Abbey Class, we aim to:
- Build independence by taking responsibility for learning, organisation and behaviour.
- Develop the skills and confidence needed to be ready for Year 6.
- Think about what we need from an experience rather than simply what we want.
- Reflect on our learning and recognise that challenge helps us grow.
We celebrate effort, resilience and kindness, knowing that progress looks different for everyone but always matters.
How Parents Can Help at Home
You play a huge role in supporting your child’s learning. Simple, regular actions at home can make a big difference:
- Encourage your child to read daily and talk about what they have read.
- Practise times tables and key number facts little and often.
- Talk about learning at school. Ask what challenged them or what they are most proud of.
- Encourage your child to keep a journal. This could be about their day, their dreams, a special memory, something they have learned or an exciting idea they have had. Regular journalling helps children develop confidence, creativity and a love of writing.
- Support good routines, including organisation, homework time and plenty of sleep.
Most importantly, celebrate effort and a positive attitude towards learning.
Picture News
Each Monday morning, one of the first things we do is explore Picture News together.
Picture News helps children develop curiosity about the wider world, think critically and discuss important issues with confidence. Looking at Picture News over the weekend with your child can be a wonderful way to spark conversations, build background knowledge and help them feel confident and prepared when they come into school on Monday morning.
Show and Tell of the Week
Each Monday, children are invited to take part in Show and Tell.
This could be:
- An object, photograph or project.
- Something linked to learning.
- Something they are proud of or interested in.
Show and Tell helps build confidence, communication skills and active listening.
