Multi-Cultural Day on Friday 20th March.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are very excited to announce that Much Wenlock Primary School will be holding our first Multi-Cultural Day on Friday 20th March.

The day will follow a similar structure to our wonderful World Book Day. Children will spend longer sessions exploring one of four cultures that represent the diverse and multicultural country we live in. The cultures we will be learning about are the UK, Pakistan, India and China.

This day aims to celebrate inclusion within our school and reflect our school values. Our goal is for pupils to leave the day with three positive and respectful things they could share when they meet someone from one of these cultures. We want children to feel confident discussing different cultures with curiosity and respect.

Throughout the day, pupils will rotate through sessions led by teachers, where they will take part in activities linked to each culture such as art, writing, music, dance and cultural exploration. Each session will also include key “sticky knowledge” questions that children will learn and revisit throughout the day.

Lunch Menu

To help celebrate the day, our amazing kitchen team will also be preparing a special multicultural lunch menu so children can experience foods from some of the cultures we are learning about.

The options will be:

• Option 1: Battered fish (as normal)

• Vegetarian option: Dahl curry from Pakistan

• Option 2 – Multicultural Taster Plate:

· Indian Samosa

· Chinese Pancake Roll

· Chicken Tikka

· Chinese Chicken Curry

· Prawn Cracker

· Naan

(We can’t amend the menu on Arbor so if choosing in advance of the day, please refer to the menu above when making a choice)

We are very excited to launch this event and hope it will become a yearly tradition at Much Wenlock, celebrating the rich cultures that make up our country.

Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch.

Kind regards,

Much Wenlock Primary School Staff

Weekly Word

This week has been a wonderful celebration of reading, creativity and community, and I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped make it so special.
Our World Book Day celebrations on Wednesday were a real highlight. It was fantastic to see so many brilliant costumes – from homemade creations to reused outfits – showcasing just how much imagination and effort had gone into them. I also absolutely loved all of the Book Bake Off entries, which were incredibly creative. Our judges had an extremely difficult job choosing the winners, which were announced today, as the standard was so high. I must admit, I’ve been focusing on eating really healthily lately, but I couldn’t resist filling my face with cake – everything in moderation, eh?
World Book Day was about much more than costumes and cakes. It was about our community. It was truly lovely to see so many parents and carers coming into school to read with their children and support our events. Thanks to your generosity, we raised just over ÂŁ300 from kind donations, which will directly benefit our children.
Throughout the week, the children also took part in author workshops, something we are proud to offer regularly as part of our commitment to developing a love of reading and writing.
Alongside all of this, there has been lots going on across school life. Edge Class enjoyed a fantastic trip to Wrekin Forest, enhancing their curriculum by delving into life in the Stone Age and bringing their learning to life. Today some of our girls had a wonderful opportunity to take part in training at Shrewsbury Town Football Ground – a fantastic experience that they will remember for a long time.
A quick reminder that our assessment week will be taking place over the next week or so. Please do reassure your children that these help us understand how best to support their learning and are nothing to worry about.
We have also recently analysed pupil, staff and parent voice in relation to our Behaviour and Relationships Policy. We have been working hard to create something that genuinely reflects the views shared with us, and we are really pleased with what is developing. We will be communicating this with everyone by the end of the summer term.
This week, we were delighted to welcome our Chair of Trustees, who visited the school, walked the grounds at lunchtime and saw our children at play and interacting together. He commented on the transformation he has seen in our school and how wonderful it was to see such happy children and such a dedicated team. I was proud to talk about our community and how much we value what we have built together.
I hope you can see how hard the team works every day to create the best possible experience for your children. While not everything can ever be perfect, please know that we are a team who listens, reflects and is always striving to improve, with one clear aim: to ensure every child thrives.
Today, I will also be sending out our parent survey, and I would really appreciate as many responses as possible. We genuinely welcome feedback as it helps us continue to improve, and if you have experienced positives, I kindly ask that you reflect those too. Our team goes above and beyond every day, and it means a great deal to be able to share that through your honest feedback.z
Finally, I hope you all have a lovely weekend, and fingers crossed the sunshine returns — it has made such a difference this week, hasn’t it?

Wildlife Photography Competition

Dear Much Wenlock Primary School,

We’re excited to invite your pupils to take part in our Wildlife Photography Competition, launched to celebrate the arrival of the Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition which will be here at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery from Saturday 25th April- Saturday 20th June.
This is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to:
  • Build confidence and creativity through hands‑on photography
  • Explore local wildlife and green spaces, however big or small
  • Connect with nature and develop their observation skills
  • Showcase their talents in a public exhibition of shortlisted entries
How it works:
Pupils can photograph any aspect of wildlife—from insects in the playground to birds in the park or pets at home. Entries can be taken on phones, tablets, or cameras. We welcome submissions from all year groups.
Key details:
  • Submission deadline: Friday 27th March
  • How to enter: see attached information
  • Categories: Under 11s, age 12-18 and adults
  • Prizes: Winning images will be displayed alongside the exhibition, and winners will receive tickets to visit the exhibition.
We would love for as many of you to get involved as possible and to and encourage young people to discover the magic of the natural world through a lens.

Power Struggles (Behaviour)
23 March, 12.00pm on Zoom

If you’re constantly locked in standoffs with your child.

If everyday requests turn into arguments.

If you find yourself repeating the same thing louder and louder and still not being heard.

You’re not alone. And you’re not doing it wrong.

So often what we label as “behaviour” is actually communication, unmet needs, or a child pushing back because they feel powerless.

In this month’s Free Parenting Clinic, we’re zooming in on power struggles:
What’s really going on underneath them
Why they escalate so fast
And how to step out of the tug of war without giving in or giving up

Join Anisa Lewis, Parenting Coach, for a relaxed, supportive 30-minute online talk, designed for busy parents who want tools that actually work in real family life.

✨ Come live or catch the replay

World Book Day 2026 – Wednesday 4th March

Dear Parents/Carers and Children

This year, World Book Day at Much Wenlock is coming with a twist…

We are setting a challenge – take part only if you want to!

We absolutely love seeing the children dressed as their favourite book characters. The creativity, the excitement, the conversations about stories – it’s brilliant. But we also know that buying a brand-new costume for one day isn’t always kind to our wallets… or our planet.

And that doesn’t quite fit with who we are.

As a school, we believe in Sustainability – looking after our environment, being thoughtful financially and caring for our community. So this year, our World Book Day theme is a:

🌍✨ Sustainability Challenge ✨🌍

We would love the children to dress up – but here’s the twist:

Your costume can be:

✔️ Made (bonus points for recycled materials!)
✔️ Reused (bring back a classic from a previous year!)
✔️ Borrowed
✔️ Or found in a charity shop

The golden rule?

✨ No brand-new costumes.

This links to our school values:

  • Wonder – using imagination and getting creative
  • Equity – making sure everyone can take part
  • Sustainability – making choices that protect our world

We know our children. We know how inventive they are. Cardboard. Old sheets. A bit of face paint. A clever idea. That’s all it takes.

In fact, we think this might be our most imaginative World Book Day yet.

📚 Wednesday 4th March

Let the planning begin…

We cannot wait to see what you create.

Warm regards,

Rachel Howell-James
Headteacher

World Book Day Costumes

Dear Parents and Carers,

For World Book Day this year, our Sustainability Ambassadors suggested a small sustainability challenge: to reuse an old costume, make a costume, borrow one, or use items from a charity shop.

This idea came directly from pupil voice and was intended to support our values in a practical way – reducing waste and, importantly, avoiding unnecessary financial pressure on families.

I do want to clarify that some of the wording in my original letter, particularly the use of the words “must” and “rule”, may have suggested that this challenge was mandatory. That was not my intention.

We completely understand that time is precious and that not every family is able to take part in this way, and we want to be very clear that this is not a rule or an expectation. It is simply a light‑hearted challenge, offered in the spirit of trying something positive together, following our children’s ideas, and bringing our values to life rather than leaving them written in a document.

If you choose to buy a new costume, that is absolutely your choice and is perfectly fine. The most important thing is that children enjoy World Book Day and feel included.

Thank you, as always, for your support and feedback.

Rachel Howell-James
Headteacher

Invite to World Book Day

Dear Parents and Carers,

We would like to invite you into school on Wednesday 4th, from 2.45pm. Please enter via the playground entrance.

This afternoon is part of our reading celebrations, giving you the opportunity to:

  • Read with your child
  • See and/or purchase some of the Book Bake Off entries

Funds raised from the Book Bake Off will go towards audio listening stations for our school library. We know not all parents/carers are able to attend due to prior commitments – please be assured all children will be included.

We are delighted to announce that this year’s Book Bake Off judges are:
Deputy Mayor of Much Wenlock, Councillor Susan Crooke‑Williams
Community Library Manager, Much Wenlock Library, Karen Hardman

There will be prizes for the winners.

As a reminder for children taking part in the Book Bake Off, please bring baked creations to the front office at the start of the school day. All entries must be clearly labelled with your child’s name and year group, and indicate whether you would like the item returned to you or donated to the school.

We look forward to welcoming you and celebrating reading together.

Kind regards,

Rachel Howell-James
Headteacher

Belonging

Our school vision is – Unlocking Potential – Empowering Every Child to Thrive.
A key part of that vision is to create a sense of belonging.
Feeling a sense of belonging plays a vital role in children’s wellbeing, confidence and gives them the ability to thrive, both academically and emotionally.
This weeks #WakeUpWednesday guide explores why belonging matters and how small, everyday interactions can make a meaningful difference in helping children feel accepted and included. We build these moments of belonging in school every day and we’d love for you to join us in building this at home, too.

Weekly Word

What a way to end the half term! It may have been a rainy few weeks, but that certainly hasn’t held us back.
We are a school committed to creating as many opportunities and experiences as possible for our children, and this week has been absolutely jam-packed. Every class has taken part in DT, Edge visited our local library, Year 5 enjoyed a fantastic STEM workshop, and our Sustainability Ambassadors worked alongside Year 5 to plant hedges in our Forest School area. Year 5 also visited William Brookes School to watch Matilda, Year 2 represented us brilliantly at the KS1 multi-sports event, and some of our Year 6 maths wizzes competed in the 3–18 Maths competition – coming a very impressive second place to Coleham.
Alongside all of this, we have been focusing on Children’s Mental Health Week. With the help of our wellbeing and behaviour ambassadors, all children have explored what belonging means and how we can actively create a sense of belonging for one another – something that is central to positive mental health. Our Sports Ambassadors have led a daily mile for all pupils, and we will be gathering pupil voice to evaluate its impact and whether this is something children would like to continue.
Finally, thank you for your responses regarding home learning and our new relationship behaviour policy. We want to get this right and not rush decisions, so we are carefully gathering parent/carer, staff and pupil voice before sharing next steps.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support. Have a wonderful half term – and here’s hoping for some sunshine!
