Weekly Word

Dear parents and carers,
What an amazing week it has been all round!
Our Ofsted report was released today and I hope you’ve had the opportunity to read it. It truly reflects the heart of our school. We are incredibly proud that the inspectors recognised not only the hard work and dedication of our staff team, but also just how special our children are. They absolutely shone.
This week, we also welcomed external moderators from the Local Authority to review our Year 6 writing. The outcomes were phenomenal. These results will be shared alongside SATs outcomes, but I wanted to let you know just how impressed they were. They described our writing curriculum as outstanding and commented that, in all their years of moderation, they had never seen such consistently high-quality writing. They were so impressed that they asked to speak directly to the children to tell them how amazing they are—an incredibly proud moment for us all.
We’ve also enjoyed some lovely community events. The Reception Father’s Day picnic and our Father’s Day breakfast were both a huge success—thank you to everyone who attended. We wish a very happy Father’s Day to all dads, stepdads, and the many important male role models who make such a difference in children’s lives.
Finally, a big well done to Year 6 for their ice lolly stall, which was a great success and will help fund their leavers’ celebrations. Thank you for your continued support.
Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Letter from Mrs Howell-James – Ofsted Inspection Results

Dear Parents/Carers and children,

I am writing to share the outcome of our recent Ofsted inspection, which I am delighted to say has seen the school achieve ‘strong standard’ and ‘expected standard’ gradings across the board.

  • The ‘strong standard’ grading in early years, inclusion, and personal development and wellbeing marks out excellent, consistent work that’s making a real difference for children.
  • Achieving ‘expected standard’ in attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, and leadership and governance is a high standard defined by Ofsted as the school doing everything that it should be doing, where children are receiving everything they need and deserve.

You can find the full Ofsted report attached and on Ofsted’s website at https://reports.ofsted.gov.uk/provider/21/149649. You can also find highlights of the report on the school’s website at: Ofsted Report Card – Much Wenlock Primary School and Nursery

You may be aware that the Ofsted inspection framework has recently changed, and this is the first time that the school has received the new-look report card. If you would like to find out more about the new report cards, you may find these resources from Ofsted useful:

I am incredibly proud to be the headteacher of our wonderful school. Over the past two years, we have been on a real journey of improvement, and it means a great deal to see the hard work and dedication of our staff, children and wider community recognised.

What matters most to me is that this reflects who we are and what we stand for. This is the Wenlock Way. Everything we do centres around our children. We are committed to unlocking potential and empowering every child to thrive, and that comes through an ambitious, carefully designed curriculum; rich opportunities beyond the classroom; a strong focus on oracy and pupil voice and creating a culture where every child feels a genuine sense of belonging and is fully included, supported and able to succeed.

What matters most to me is that this shines through so clearly – that our children feel heard, that they know they matter, and that they have actively shaped what we have created here. We work hard to ensure every child is known as an individual and that barriers are recognised and removed so that all children can access the same opportunities. This has taken an enormous amount of thought, care and hard work to build something that is truly special for our young people – from giving children the very best start in the early years, to improving outcomes year on year, to providing enrichment and experiences that help every child discover their strengths.

We believe every child deserves the very best education. Every child deserves to be heard, to be challenged and to be celebrated – regardless of their starting point or circumstance. That is what we have worked hard to achieve, and what we will continue to strive for.

Of course, we are proud of this recognition, but we are not complacent. Complacency is the enemy of progress. We are absolutely committed to continuing this positive trajectory and ensuring that we keep getting better for our children, our families and our community.

None of the decisions we have made have ever been about inspection. They have always been about doing what is right for our children, our team and our community. It hasn’t been easy – this has taken resilience, determination and a huge amount of collective effort.

I feel incredibly fortunate to work alongside our staff team. Education is not a 9 to 5 job, and this improvement has only been possible because people have gone above and beyond every single day – building relationships, giving their time, and creating something that children feel proud to be part of.

I often say to our team – don’t be a drain, be a radiator. Bring energy, positivity and a can-do attitude. That spirit runs right through our school.

We are proud of our heritage, proud of our community and excited for the future. There is something really special here – a real sense of belonging, a shared belief in our children and, I would say, a little bit of Wenlock magic.

Thank you as always for the support you offer to your children and our wonderful school.

Best wishes,

Rachel Howell-James

Children and Young People’s Diabetes Service

The Children and Young People’s Diabetes Service have asked us to share these posters to help raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of Type 1 diabetes.

The Big Future

For the first time, hundreds of thousands of children will be eligible to vote in the next general election at age 16, the biggest change to the franchise in half a century – yet just one in five children say politicians listen to them.

That’s why I’m doing my final survey, The Big Future, to talk to a million children, to listen to them. And to find out about what it’s like to be a child today.

I am asking children about the changes they want to see in their communities, their biggest concerns, and their hopes for the future. More than anything, I want to know what they think a good childhood should look like, now and in the future.

As ever, thank you so much for your support.

FREE Monthly Parenting Clinic

Parenting Across Two Homes: Supporting Your Child Through Family Change

Monday 15th June • 12.00pm • Live on Zoom (Replay available)

When a family changes shape, children feel it deeply.

But with the right support, parents can create calm, stability, and connection, even across two homes.

This clinic is for any parent navigating life after separation or family change.

Parents often tell me:

  • “Things are finalised, but I still feel unsure.”
  • “My child’s behaviour has changed and I don’t know what they need.”
  • “I want to protect them from the tension.”

You are not alone. And you are not expected to know all the answers.

In this 30‑minute session, Anisa will share:

• What children need most to feel safe after family change

• How to support big feelings, theirs and yours

• Simple ways to create stability and connection across two homes

• How to communicate with your co‑parent in a child‑centred way

This is not legal advice or mediation, it is emotional and relational support to help families feel whole again.

Weekly Word

Dear Parents and Carers

What a two weeks it has been! I don’t think we’ve quite caught our breath – there has been so much going on across school.

Last week, it was brilliant to see so many of you come in to visit our biome installations and our Room of Hope for David Attenborough’s 100th birthday. It was really special and the feedback has been amazing. I felt incredibly proud watching how confidently the children spoke about sustainability – they really are living that value, not just talking about it. Thanks also to all the staff who put in so much effort to make the vision come to life.

This week, our Year 6 children have been absolute stars. They’ve shown real resilience and determination during SATs, and it’s been a privilege to spend time with them throughout the week. Their knowledge is impressive, but what stood out even more was their attitude – calm, positive and just getting on with it. We know SATs are only one small part of their journey, but I couldn’t be prouder of them.

We ended the week with a lovely picnic for International Day of Families. It was a huge relief that the weather held out, and it was just so nice to see everyone outside together – children playing, parents chatting, and that real sense of community we value so much.

I also wanted to say a genuine thank you for all the support over the past couple of weeks. We’ve had a lot going on behind the scenes, with Ofsted, visitors and interviews, and throughout it all the children have been fantastic ambassadors for the school. They really have shone.

Have a lovely weekend.

Weekly Word

Although shorter than normal, this week has been a very busy one!
On Wednesday, Edge and Windmill class enjoyed getting active in the sunshine with Tri-golf and orienteering at William Brookes, great teamwork, determination and lots of smiles all round (see the post below).
Today we’ve finished the week in style by celebrating Sir David Attenborough’s birthday with some wonderful art installations and performances. Thank you so much to everyone who came along to share in the celebrations, it was lovely to see so many of you in school. Thank you for the donations of cardboard, milk bottles, fabric and animals (both real and cuddly!).

Finally, we have of course had inspectors in school. We want to say an enormous thank you to every single one of you for your patience, flexibility and support. You really are such a vital part of our school community, and this week has been a proper team effort. We couldn’t do it without you.

Have a lovely weekend.
