Lockdown Drill Practice

Dear Parents and Carers,

As part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all pupils and staff, we will be carrying out a lockdown practice drill in school over the next few weeks. This is part of our regular safety procedures, similar to our fire drills, and helps everyone know what to do should we ever need to secure the school building.

A lockdown procedure would be used in the unlikely event of a situation where it is safer for pupils and staff to remain inside the building – for example, if there was an incident in the local area, such as a loose dog on the school grounds or emergency services responding nearby. Although it is very unlikely that we would ever need to activate a full lockdown, it is important that we are always prepared and that the children know how to respond calmly and confidently.

Before the drill takes place, staff will be speaking to the children in an age-appropriate way to explain what to expect and to reassure them that it is simply a practice to help keep everyone safe. To help support this, we would be grateful if you could also take a moment to talk to your child at home. You might like to explain that just like we practise what to do if there is a fire, we also sometimes practise what to do if we need to stay inside the building to keep safe.
